The top five advice for decorating a balcony

Even a smaller balcony can fulfill dreams of a lounge atmosphere and green oasis. It just requires planning both in depth and height and multifunctional furniture.
For Trine Lindstrøm Eriksen, the busy season begins these days, when the temperatures once again are calling for life outdoors. Together with her parents, she owns Balcony Living Cph, which specializes in producing and retailing everything from balcony flower boxes, folding tables, parasols and lounge furniture for balconies of all sizes.
Trine Lindstrøm Eriksen lives in an apartment on the 4th floor with her husband and two small children, so when she advises customers and helps them design balconies, she can call on her own experience.
Her philosophy is to think carefully about your needs before buying furniture for your balcony.
A barbecue and a big parasol may look really cozy, but if you never barbecue or if there's hardly any sun on your balcony, you'd probably be better off investing in some nice blankets and furniture to lounge on.
After many years in the industry, she has narrowed it down to 5 main guidelines that are important to keep in mind before decorating your balcony:
1. Think in terms of height
Think not only about the floor space, but also about the height.
A grid is brilliant for hanging flower boxes and bringing in more plants, as well as for hanging various barbecue utensils and gardening accessories.
Check your property's regulations regarding hanging barbecues, balcony flower boxes and parasols on the outside of the balcony.
2. Bohemian or minimalism?
Decide on a style and go with it. The less square meters your balcony has, the more important it is to have a consistent look and feel for a stylish visual expression. Are you into minimalism, bohemian or cool nordic nuances?
Consider accessories that also match the interior design, so you can use the cushions, blankets, string lights and lanterns inside during the winter months.
3. Maintenance or not
How much time do you want to spend on maintenance? If you want furniture that can be left outside all year round, choose plastic, artificial rattan and metal. If you want wood, teak is the most durable and requires very little maintenance.

4. Multifunctional furniture
Choose multifunctional furniture such as a hanging table that can be easily folded down to make room for a deck chair. The more a piece of furniture can be folded and stacked, the more practical it is on a balcony. Remember that small tables and stools can also be used as extra seating.
5. Think about the depth
Many people choose to create a lounge environment on their balcony because it's a great way to relax in the good weather. To get the most out of a lounge sofa, consider making the most of the balcony's depth, so you can both sit and lie down in the same piece of furniture.
